Endpoint risk

The possibility that a user’s device or account is compromised, bypassing protections in the cloud.

Endpoint risk is the chance that a user’s device, browser session, or account is compromised, even when the cloud service itself uses strong encryption or a zero-access design. In cloud security, this matters because encryption protects data at rest in the provider’s system, but it does not protect data once it is decrypted on the user’s endpoint. If an attacker controls the endpoint, they can read files, steal session tokens, intercept authentication codes, or change recovery settings.

In real attacks, endpoint risk appears through phishing, malware, stolen passwords, SIM swapping, and compromised laptops or phones. That is why cloud defenses focus on more than storage encryption: phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication, device hardening, session monitoring, and secure recovery processes all reduce exposure. For users, the practical lesson is simple: a secure cloud account can still be defeated by an insecure device or a weak login path.
