Enterprise CA

A certificate authority integrated with Active Directory and used for enterprise certificate issuance.

An Enterprise CA is a certificate authority that is integrated with Active Directory and used to issue certificates inside a Windows domain. It can publish certificate templates, use directory-based policy, and authenticate requests through domain identity and authorization rules. Because it is tied to the enterprise directory, it is more than a simple certificate server: it is part of the organization’s identity infrastructure.

Enterprise CAs matter in cyber security because certificates often act as proof of identity for logon, encryption, code signing, and device trust. If an attacker can abuse certificate enrollment, template permissions, or CA trust behavior, they may obtain a certificate that the environment accepts as highly trusted. Defenders treat Enterprise CAs as Tier 0 assets, monitor enrollment and issuance closely, and restrict who can manage templates and CA configuration. Strong governance here helps prevent certificate-based privilege escalation and trust abuse.
