Evidence validation is the process of checking logs, forensic artifacts, and other reliable records before accepting a claim about a cyber incident’s impact. It helps distinguish verified findings-such as confirmed access to specific files-from assertions that have not been independently substantiated.
In ransomware cases, threat actors may claim to have stolen data or publish a victim listing to create pressure. Those statements alone do not prove that access or exfiltration occurred. Defenders should preserve relevant logs, review identity and file-access records, and compare findings across available sources. Clear validation supports accurate incident scoping and helps organizations communicate what is known, alleged, or still uncertain.
