Exposure Discovery

The identification of services, systems, or assets that are visible outside an organization’s intended security boundary.

Exposure discovery is the process of identifying services, systems, and assets that are visible outside an organization’s intended security boundary. This can include internet-facing servers, open ports, cloud storage, remote access portals, APIs, or forgotten test systems. The goal is to see what an attacker can reach before the attacker does.

It matters because exposed assets are often the easiest entry points in real intrusions. A single unpatched service, weakly protected interface, or misconfigured cloud resource can create direct access to internal data or a foothold for further movement. Defenders use exposure discovery in attack surface management, vulnerability management, and cloud security to continuously find and verify what is reachable, then prioritize fixes by business impact and risk. Accurate discovery depends on current asset inventory, validation, and human review, because stale or noisy results can hide the exposures that matter most.
