Extortion tools

software or scripts used to pressure victims for payment or leverage.

Extortion tools are software or scripts attackers use to pressure victims into paying or meeting other demands. In ransomware operations, they may support ransom notes, contact with victims, payment instructions, or threats to publish stolen data. They are distinct from tools used to gain access or deploy malware, though they can be part of the same operation.

These tools matter because they help turn an intrusion into a coordinated pressure campaign. Defenders can look for signs such as ransom-note files, unusual data-staging or leak-site activity, and suspicious communications or payment instructions. Detection and response should also address the underlying access, credential abuse, and malware; removing extortion tooling alone does not end an attack or prevent stolen data from being misused.
