Facial photographs

biometric images that can increase privacy and impersonation risk if exposed.

Facial photographs are biometric images that capture a person’s face and can be used for identity verification, access control, or recordkeeping. In cyber security, they are sensitive because a face is not a password: if a photo is exposed, it can reveal identity, workplace details, or location context and may help attackers build convincing impersonation campaigns.

Criminals can misuse facial photographs for phishing, social engineering, account recovery abuse, and preparation for deepfake or face-match attacks. Even if a system uses face recognition, leaked images can still raise privacy risk and support broader fraud when combined with names, emails, or phone numbers. Defenses focus on minimizing collection, encrypting storage, restricting access, logging retrieval, and using strong authentication such as multi-factor controls rather than relying on images alone.
