Fake hotspot

A rogue wireless network designed to look legitimate.

A fake hotspot is a rogue wireless network that copies the look of a legitimate Wi-Fi service, often by using a familiar network name or a strong signal to attract nearby devices. It may be created with a laptop, phone, or dedicated access point and can sit close to the real network so users choose it by mistake.

This matters because Wi-Fi trust is often based on convenience, not verification. Once a device connects, an attacker may observe connection attempts, redirect traffic, or present fake login pages to collect credentials. Defenders reduce the risk by checking network names carefully, disabling automatic join for unknown networks, using VPNs on untrusted Wi-Fi, and confirming the service with staff or official signage before connecting. In practice, fake hotspots exploit attention gaps, especially in busy public places where users connect quickly.
