Fake security alert

A fabricated warning designed to create urgency and fear.

A fake security alert is a fabricated warning that imitates a browser, operating system, or security product message. Its purpose is to create urgency and fear so the victim reacts before thinking critically. These alerts often claim the device is infected, locked, or at risk, and they may display a phone number, payment request, or support prompt.

In cyber security, fake alerts are a common social engineering tactic. They can appear in malvertising pages, scam pop-ups, phishing sites, or browser-lock screens that make normal browsing seem impossible. The danger is not only the message itself, but the action it pushes: calling a scammer, installing remote-access software, revealing credentials, or paying for bogus support. Defenders look for obvious warning signs such as high-pressure language, unexpected browser dialogs, and instructions that bypass official support channels. Users should close the page with trusted browser controls and verify any alert through known-good security tools or vendor sites.
