Feeder-level monitoring

Tracking electricity flow on individual distribution lines to localize anomalies and losses.

Feeder-level monitoring is the practice of measuring electricity flow on individual distribution feeders, rather than only at a substation or at the whole-network level. By comparing input and output on each line, utilities can identify where energy is being lost, misused, or diverted.

In cyber security and critical infrastructure defense, this matters because visibility is a control. Accurate feeder data helps operators distinguish technical losses such as overloads and resistive heating from non-technical problems such as meter tampering, illegal tapping, or data manipulation. It also supports faster anomaly detection, targeted inspections, and better recovery after faults. In modern smart-grid environments, feeder monitoring often relies on remote sensors and communications systems, so protecting telemetry integrity, device authentication, and segmentation is essential: if the data is altered, defenders may localize the wrong fault or miss a real attack.
