File and directory discovery

An attacker activity that lists folders and files on a system to locate useful data.

File and directory discovery is the act of enumerating folders and files on a system to learn what data is present and where it lives. Attackers use it after gaining access to map user profiles, documents, shared drives, logs, configuration files, and other valuable targets. On Windows, this can be done with built-in commands, malware functions, or remote file-management features that list paths and metadata before copying, renaming, or deleting anything.

This matters because discovery is often the first step in theft, sabotage, or ransomware staging. Once an intruder knows the directory structure, they can find sensitive files, choose high-value targets, and avoid obvious decoys. Defenders look for unusual recursive listing, bursty access to many directories, and activity from unexpected processes in locations such as torrent or download folders. File discovery combined with file transfer or renaming is a strong sign of hands-on intrusion, not normal user behavior.
