File History is a built-in Windows backup feature that automatically copies selected user files to an external drive or network location. It keeps earlier versions of documents, photos, and other personal data so they can be restored after accidental deletion, corruption, or unwanted changes.
In cyber security, File History matters because it can reduce the impact of ransomware, destructive malware, and simple operator error. If attackers encrypt or overwrite files, a working File History backup may let defenders recover clean copies without paying a ransom. The flip side is that the feature itself must be healthy: if a patch, configuration problem, or storage failure breaks the backup job, recovery options can silently disappear. Administrators should verify that backups are still updating and test restores regularly, because a backup that has not been checked may fail when it is needed most.
