File recovery is the process of restoring deleted, damaged, encrypted, or otherwise lost data from backups, snapshots, storage replicas, or forensic recovery tools. In normal operations, it helps organizations return to service after accidental deletion, hardware failure, or ransomware encryption. Reliable recovery depends on having verified backups, tested restore procedures, and enough access to rebuild systems without reintroducing the original problem.
In cyber security, the phrase can also be used as a trust lure. Attackers, affiliates, or fake “recovery services” may promise file recovery, decryption, or data restoration to pressure victims into paying, sharing credentials, or opening a new line of contact. Defenders should verify any recovery claim, insist on independent evidence, and treat unexpected offers of help as suspicious until authenticated. Strong recovery planning-offline or immutable backups, restore drills, and incident-response controls-reduces the leverage of ransomware and re-extortion.
