Film photography

Image creation using photosensitive film instead of a digital sensor.

Film photography is image creation using photosensitive film instead of a digital sensor. The exposure is stored chemically on the film, then developed later into negatives or prints. Because the image is not produced as an immediate digital file, film workflows avoid many common digital artifacts such as embedded metadata, cloud sync, and device logs.

In cyber security, that matters because not every useful image is networked or machine-readable. Film can reduce an attacker’s digital footprint in some situations, but it also limits easy sharing, search, and automated analysis. Defenders may encounter film images during incident response, evidence collection, or document handling, where the main risks shift from malware and exfiltration to physical custody, scanning quality, and chain of evidence. Film photography is also a reminder that analog media can be used to bypass controls built around software systems.
