Financial freeze workflow

a process for blocking suspicious funds while an investigation proceeds.

A financial freeze workflow is the formal process used to identify suspicious money, place holds on it, and prevent it from being moved while investigators review the activity. It usually involves alerts from banks, payment processors, fraud teams, or law enforcement, followed by checks for account ownership, transaction patterns, sanctions exposure, and evidence of fraud.

This matters because scams and other cyber-enabled crimes depend on fast money movement. If funds can be frozen early, criminals lose access to proceeds, mule accounts become less useful, and recovery becomes more likely. In real attacks, freeze workflows appear after phishing, investment fraud, account takeover, or mule-network detection, when defenders see unusual transfers or linked accounts. Good workflows combine clear escalation rules, record keeping, cross-team coordination, and legal authorization so legitimate customers are not blocked longer than necessary.
