Financial records are internal business documents that track spending, approvals, invoices, budgets, cost calculations, and other operating details. In cybersecurity, they are valuable because they often expose how an organization works even when they do not contain customer data. Attackers look for them to understand cash flow, vendor relationships, approval chains, and pressure points that can be used in extortion.
These records matter in real attacks because they can make a leak credible and damaging without revealing a full system compromise. Expense forms, accounting exports, and cost worksheets may show executive names, project priorities, supplier pricing, or planning assumptions. Defenders protect them with access control, encryption, logging, and strict data classification, since even a limited leak can create financial, legal, and reputational risk.
