For parts

A sale condition indicating the item is not guaranteed to work and may only be useful for salvage.

“For parts” is a sale condition that tells a buyer the item is not guaranteed to work. It usually means the seller is offering the device for salvage, component reuse, or repair experimentation rather than normal use. The label is a warning, not a diagnosis: the item may have one obvious fault, or several hidden ones.

In cybersecurity, the phrase matters as a trust lesson. A system that looks partly functional can still hide deeper defects in firmware, storage, power delivery, or security settings. Attackers often exploit this kind of false confidence by targeting neglected or “mostly working” assets that have unknown history. Defenders use the same mindset in reverse: treat unverified hardware, recovered devices, and second-hand systems as suspicious until they are tested, cleaned, and documented. The practical rule is simple: a quick check is not enough to prove a broken or reused device is safe.
