A fully managed service is a cloud or IT service model in which the provider handles part of the day-to-day operations for the customer. That can include provisioning, patching, monitoring, backups, or routine maintenance, while the customer keeps control over business goals, access policy, and data use.
In cyber security, this matters because outsourcing operations changes where risk sits. The service may reduce staff workload and improve consistency, but it also creates dependence on the provider’s logging, identity controls, incident response, and patching discipline. Attackers often exploit weak account management, unclear permissions, or gaps in the shared-responsibility model rather than the managed platform itself. Defenders use fully managed services to improve coverage and speed, but only if contracts, audit rights, and escalation paths are clear. Without that governance, the organization may lose visibility even while believing the provider is “handling security.”
