A gated dataset is a dataset that cannot be downloaded or reused until the requester is approved by the owner. Unlike public datasets, access is controlled with account checks, terms of use, or manual review. This keeps sensitive, copyrighted, or high-risk data from spreading without oversight.
In cyber security, gating helps reduce exposure of internal or valuable training data. It limits who can access materials that may contain secrets, personal data, or proprietary content, and it gives defenders a clear approval trail. Attackers often look for weak points around this control, such as stolen accounts, overly broad tokens, or misconfigured access lists. For defenders, gated datasets are part of blast-radius control: if a credential is compromised, tightly approved datasets are less likely to be exposed than public ones.
