GDALRaster

A GeoDjango helper for loading and manipulating raster data, including file-backed inputs.

GDALRaster is a GeoDjango helper for loading and working with raster geospatial data, such as satellite imagery, terrain grids, and other pixel-based map layers. It wraps GDAL-backed raster files and lets an application inspect or modify bands, metadata, and georeference information from Python code.

In security terms, GDALRaster matters because file-backed raster input is not just data: it is a parser entry point. If an application accepts untrusted raster paths or uploads, the runtime may touch the filesystem and invoke complex native libraries, which can lead to crashes, denial of service, or unsafe file access when validation is weak. Defenders should treat raster handling as a sensitive subsystem: restrict who can supply files, run with minimal permissions, isolate workers, and keep GeoDjango and GDAL components patched. In attacks, this kind of feature is attractive because it sits in less-audited code paths that developers may assume are harmless.
