Grafana MCP Server is an integration layer that lets AI clients use the Model Context Protocol to interact with Grafana-facing tools and data. Instead of talking directly to the dashboard, an agent sends structured requests to this server, which then brokers access to queries, metadata, or other exposed functions.
This matters because the server sits on a trust boundary between AI systems and observability data. If it is misconfigured, over-permissioned, or vulnerable, an attacker may abuse the tool bridge to bypass safeguards and reach sensitive operational information. In attacks, that can mean turning a convenient AI helper into a path into internal telemetry. In defenses, the priorities are patching quickly, enforcing authentication, minimizing exposed tools, applying least privilege to Grafana permissions, and validating origins and requests carefully in web-based deployments.
