The Hands-Free Profile (HFP) and Headset Profile (HSP) are Bluetooth profiles that define how a headset or earbuds handle call control, button events, and microphone audio. They let a phone or computer route voice calls to the accessory, answer or end calls, and switch between playback and voice input. In short, these profiles are what make wireless audio gear behave like a communications device, not just a speaker.
These profiles matter in security because they can expose voice-capture and call-routing functions to any device that becomes a trusted Bluetooth peer. If pairing is weak or unauthenticated, an attacker within radio range may be able to bond a device and then trigger headset-style behavior, such as audio rerouting or microphone access. Defenders look for authenticated pairing, strict bond management, and firmware that enforces profile permissions. Removing stale pairings and updating device software helps prevent a rogue device from staying in the call path.
