A health information exchange is the infrastructure that lets hospitals, clinics, labs, pharmacies, and other care providers share clinical data in a structured way. HIEs may move lab results, medication histories, allergies, imaging summaries, and patient identifiers across separate organizations while preserving enough context for treatment and billing.
In cyber security, HIEs matter because they expand the trust boundary. A compromise of one participant, API, account, or integration can expose records moving between many systems, not just one database. Attackers may target HIE-connected workflows for phishing, fraudulent record access, data theft, or ransomware spread. Defenders protect HIEs with strong authentication, encryption, logging, least privilege, vendor review, and careful validation of partner connections. Monitoring for unusual query patterns and data exports is essential because HIEs are designed for broad sharing, which can also make abuse harder to spot.
