Home directory

The main per-user folder on Unix-like systems, often used for personal files and settings.

A home directory is the main per-user folder on Unix-like systems, usually where a person stores documents, project files, configuration data, and application settings. It often contains hidden dotfiles such as shell profiles, SSH keys, and editor preferences, so it is both a convenience feature and a sensitive security boundary.

In cyber security, the home directory matters because many tools run with access to it by default. Malware, unsafe scripts, or over-privileged automation can read secrets, alter startup files, or delete data in this space. Defenders reduce risk by applying least privilege, sandboxing agents and apps, separating work data from personal files, and keeping backups. Treating the home directory as trusted but protected helps limit damage when a command, process, or assistant behaves unexpectedly.
