Hot fix

A targeted vendor repair applied to address a specific vulnerability without a full upgrade.

A hot fix is a targeted vendor repair that addresses a specific vulnerability without requiring a full software upgrade. It is usually smaller and faster to deploy than a major release, and it may be delivered as a patch, replacement package, or release-specific fix for one affected version.

In cyber security, hot fixes matter because they reduce exposure quickly when an issue is being actively exploited or is too risky to leave unpatched. Administrators use them to close authentication flaws, remote-code-execution bugs, and management-plane weaknesses while limiting operational disruption. In practice, defenders must match the hot fix to the exact product version, test it for compatibility, and verify that the vulnerable service is no longer exposed. Attackers often race these repairs, knowing that systems left on old builds remain easy targets until the fix is applied.
