HVD

hosted virtual desktop used for centralized work access and internal application delivery.

HVD stands for hosted virtual desktop. It is a centrally managed desktop session delivered from a server or cloud platform, allowing users to work inside a controlled corporate environment while their local device only displays the session. Organizations use HVDs to simplify remote work, enforce policy, and keep internal applications and data inside the data center or virtual infrastructure.

In cyber security, HVDs matter because they concentrate access to sensitive systems. If an attacker steals credentials, hijacks a session, or abuses a contractor account, the virtual desktop can become a gateway to email, file shares, admin tools, and SaaS apps. Defenders therefore monitor HVD logins, session duration, device posture, and unusual copy-paste, file transfer, or privilege changes. Strong MFA, tight entitlement controls, and logging across the HVD stack help reduce the risk that a legitimate remote workspace is turned into a hidden foothold.
