A hypothesis is a proposed explanation or idea that has not yet been established by evidence. In cybersecurity, it might be that a new defensive control will block a particular attack, or that unusual network activity indicates a compromise. It is a starting point for investigation, not a confirmed finding.
Testing a hypothesis means collecting evidence under relevant conditions and checking whether the idea holds up. Security teams may reproduce an attack in a controlled environment, examine logs, or compare results before and after a change. This matters because defenses that seem promising can fail against real or adaptive attackers. Until testing supports the claim, describe it as a hypothesis rather than a proven result.
