Identity document replacement is the administrative process of reissuing official documents, such as passports, national ID cards, or residence permits, after loss, theft, damage, or a security concern. It is not a cyber term by itself, but it becomes important in cyber security when personal data may have been exposed, misused, or used to support impersonation.
In real attacks, criminals may steal identity details from phishing, mailbox compromise, or data leaks and then use them to request services, open accounts, or bypass verification. Defenders treat replacement as part of incident response because the old document may no longer be trusted. Strong controls include identity proofing, case review, fraud monitoring, and secure communication channels for recovery. The goal is to reduce the chance that a compromised identity can be reused against the victim.
