Identity fabric is an architectural layer that connects separate identity and access management systems so organizations can apply policy and visibility across cloud, applications, APIs, and infrastructure. It does not replace existing IAM tools; instead, it links them, correlates identity data, and gives defenders a broader view of who or what is requesting access.
This matters because modern environments rely heavily on service accounts, workload identities, API tokens, and automation pipelines. Attackers often target these non-human identities when ownership is unclear, credentials are over-privileged, or tokens are not rotated. A strong identity fabric helps defenders spot abnormal behavior at runtime, such as a script reaching unfamiliar resources or a machine account calling APIs outside its usual scope. In practice, it supports zero-trust controls by making identity decisions continuous, visible, and easier to revoke when risk appears.
