Identity farming

creating large numbers of fake or disposable accounts for abuse.

Identity farming is the mass creation of fake, stolen, or disposable online accounts to support abuse. Attackers use these identities to make scams look legitimate, evade bans, inflate engagement, and create backup access when one account is removed. The goal is not a single fake profile, but a repeatable supply of accounts that can be rotated through different platforms and services.

In cyber security, identity farming matters because many fraud campaigns depend on scale and trust. A large pool of accounts can be used to send spam, run phishing messages, seed fake reviews, join groups, or amplify disinformation. Defenders look for patterns such as rapid sign-up bursts, reused devices or IP ranges, similar profile data, and coordinated posting behavior. Strong account verification, abuse detection, rate limits, and cross-platform intelligence help disrupt identity farming before it becomes a larger fraud infrastructure.
