An identity management tool is software that helps administrators control user accounts, logins, and access rights across an organization. It often sits between users and core systems such as Active Directory, handling password resets, account unlocks, enrollment, authentication workflows, and access policies. Because it brokers trust, it usually has privileged access to sensitive configuration and user data.
In cyber security, these tools matter because a weakness in their API, login logic, or client component can become a fast path into the environment. Attackers target them to bypass authentication, harvest credentials, alter account settings, or execute code on the host that runs the service. Defenders should treat identity tools as critical infrastructure: patch them quickly, restrict management interfaces, monitor API use, and limit exposure to trusted networks. A flaw here can turn a convenience platform into a gateway to the rest of the enterprise.
