Identity monitoring is a security service that watches for signs that personal data has been exposed, traded, or reused in suspicious places. It typically checks breach databases, dark-web markets, scam sites, and other data sources for identifiers such as email addresses, passwords, Social Security numbers, phone numbers, or bank details. When a match is found, the service alerts the user so they can respond quickly.
In cyber security, identity monitoring matters because stolen data is often the first step in account takeover, phishing, tax fraud, and credential-stuffing attacks. Attackers may combine leaked emails and passwords with other personal details to impersonate a victim or reset accounts. On the defensive side, identity monitoring helps shorten the time between exposure and response. It does not stop a breach by itself, but it gives users a chance to change passwords, enable multifactor authentication, freeze credit, or watch for unauthorized logins before the damage spreads.
