Identity-related functions

Features that help confirm who a user is before granting access to services.

Identity-related functions are the features a service uses to verify a user’s identity before allowing access. They include login, registration, multi-factor authentication, account recovery, device binding, and identity checks tied to documents, biometrics, or trusted accounts. In practice, these functions sit at the front door of digital systems and decide who is allowed in.

They matter because identity controls often protect payments, messaging, public services, and admin tools. If they are weak, attackers can steal accounts through phishing, credential stuffing, SIM swapping, session theft, or abuse of recovery flows. If they are strong, defenders can reduce unauthorized access with MFA, risk-based checks, audit logs, and least-privilege access rules. In centralized platforms, identity-related functions become especially sensitive because one compromise can expose many connected services.
