Identity trace

A record or clue tied to an account, device, or login used in an investigation.

An identity trace is a record or clue that ties online activity to a specific account, device, or login. It can include usernames, email addresses, device identifiers, IP addresses, authentication logs, session data, or recovery details. In cyber investigations, these traces help analysts link an alias, a machine, or a service account to a real-world operator or a broader group.

Identity traces matter because many attacks are not solved by malware analysis alone. Defenders and investigators often rely on audit logs, access records, and account activity to reconstruct who accessed what, when, and from where. Attackers try to hide these traces with VPNs, stolen accounts, disposable infrastructure, or reused identities, but small mistakes can still expose patterns. For security teams, preserving logs and monitoring account behavior makes it possible to validate incidents, support attribution, and turn suspicion into evidence.
