Illiquidity

The difficulty of exiting an investment quickly without a price penalty.

Illiquidity is the difficulty of exiting an investment quickly without accepting a lower price. In an illiquid market, there may be few buyers, no active secondary market, or contractual lockups that prevent redemption. The practical result is that the quoted value of an asset may be hard to realize in cash when an investor wants to sell.

In cyber security and digital finance, illiquidity matters because attackers often use hard-to-exit products to trap victims. Fraudulent platforms may promise strong returns while hiding lock-in periods, thin trading, or withdrawal limits. Defenders and analysts watch for these conditions in online investment services, loan platforms, and tokenized assets, because illiquidity increases both financial risk and the impact of poor disclosure. If a user cannot exit quickly, even a small market shock or platform failure can turn a paper gain into a real loss.
