Image matching

The step of finding the same object or feature in both camera views.

Image matching is the process of identifying the same object or visual feature in two images. In stereo vision, software compares corresponding points in the left and right camera views; their positional difference, or disparity, helps estimate distance. Matching works best when cameras are calibrated and the scene has clear, consistent visual details.

Accurate matches matter because errors can produce unreliable depth measurements. In practical systems, lighting changes, motion, repetitive patterns, or partially hidden objects can confuse matching algorithms. Engineers test and validate these results before using them to guide robots, inspections, or automated decisions. In cyber security, this is relevant wherever machine vision feeds into a security-sensitive system: attackers may exploit weak sensing assumptions, while defenders should treat image-derived measurements as inputs that need verification rather than unquestioned truth.
