An in-game economy is the system a game uses to generate, track, spend, and balance virtual currency, items, upgrades, and other rewards. It shapes how players progress and what actions feel valuable, whether money is earned through missions, traded between players, or spent on gear and access to content.
In cyber security, in-game economies matter because they are high-value targets. Attackers may use bots to farm currency, exploit dupes or logic bugs to create items, steal accounts to drain balances, or scam players through fake trades and marketplace fraud. Defenders protect these systems with server-side validation, transaction logging, anti-cheat controls, anomaly detection, and limits on rapid or suspicious transfers. When the economy is tied to progression, as in a money gate, securing it also protects game pacing and prevents abuse from changing the player experience.
