In silico

Computer-based analysis or simulation performed before laboratory testing.

In silico means computer-based analysis or simulation performed before physical testing. In security work, it usually refers to running code, models, or attack scenarios in software instead of on live systems. That can include malware sandboxes, network emulation, exploit simulations, and automated proof-of-concept testing.

It matters because it helps teams find risk early and safely. Defenders use in silico methods to study malicious behavior, validate detections, and test controls without exposing production assets. Attackers also use simulations to refine payloads, check whether malware is likely to be blocked, or tune phishing and delivery chains before launching them. The value is speed and safety, but the limitation is realism: a result that works in a simulator may fail in the wild if the environment, data, or assumptions are incomplete.
