Incident logs are records of security events collected from systems, applications, networks, and security tools during an intrusion or suspected incident. They usually include timestamps, user or host identifiers, actions taken, alerts triggered, and error messages. Good logs create a timeline that helps defenders reconstruct what happened, in what order, and on which assets.
In cyber security, incident logs are essential for detection, investigation, and recovery. Analysts use them to spot unusual logins, privilege changes, malware execution, lateral movement, and data exfiltration. During an attack, logs can reveal the initial access point and the attacker’s path. In defense, they support alert triage, forensic analysis, and incident reporting. If logs are incomplete, altered, or retained too briefly, responders may lose the evidence needed to confirm impact or contain the threat.
