Independent auditing

External review used to check security controls, evidence, and governance without relying only on internal claims.

Independent auditing is an external review of security controls, logs, evidence, and governance. Unlike internal assessments, it is performed by a party that is not responsible for building or operating the system, so the review is less likely to be shaped by assumptions, missed failures, or business pressure.

In cyber security, independent audits matter because defenders need proof, not just claims. Auditors can test whether access controls work, whether monitoring is complete, whether approvals are enforced, and whether records match what the system actually did. In AI-enabled environments, this is especially important when agents can call tools, move data, or take actions with limited supervision. An independent review can help spot weak privilege boundaries, missing logs, or controls that fail under adversarial input. For critical systems, audits support TEVV, compliance, and incident preparedness by showing whether safeguards are real, measurable, and capable of limiting damage.
