Independent verification

External review used to check whether stated protections are actually in place.

Independent verification is an external review used to confirm that stated security or privacy protections are actually in place. The reviewer should not be the same team that designed, approved, or operates the control, because independence reduces bias and helps expose gaps between policy and reality.

In cyber security, independent verification matters because many defenses are only as strong as their implementation. A company may claim encryption, access controls, logging, or transfer safeguards, but an outside assessment can check configuration, evidence, and operating practice. Attackers often exploit the difference between what is documented and what is deployed, so independent review helps detect weak settings, missing monitoring, or unenforced rules. It is common in audits, certification schemes, penetration testing, compliance checks, and third-party assessments, where the goal is to prove controls are trustworthy rather than merely asserted.
