Industrial automation

technology and services that support manufacturing processes and plant operations.

Industrial automation is the use of hardware, software, and connected control systems to run manufacturing processes and plant operations with limited human intervention. It includes tools such as robotics, motion control, pneumatics, sensors, programmable controllers, and engineering workstations that keep production systems moving.

It matters in cyber security because these environments combine business IT, remote access, vendor support, and operational technology. If attackers gain credentials, exploit exposed services, or move through poorly segmented networks, they may reach systems that affect production, safety, or quality. Defenders protect industrial automation by separating control networks, restricting remote access, monitoring engineering accounts, and validating every claim of compromise with logs and asset data. In extortion cases, a named automation supplier may indicate risk to operations even when breach scope is still unconfirmed.
