An industrial monitoring tool is software used in plants and other operational technology environments to observe equipment health, status, alarms, or performance. It may read controller data, poll sensors, log events, or display live trends for engineers and operators. Legitimate tools are common in maintenance workflows, which is why they are often trusted quickly.
That trust makes the category attractive to attackers. Malicious scripts can be disguised as monitoring utilities to blend into normal plant traffic, reach PLCs, or collect system details before a larger intrusion. Defenders should verify provenance, approved use, and expected behavior, then restrict access with network segmentation, logging, and change control. In practice, a tool that only claims to “monitor” can still be dangerous if it authenticates to controllers, enumerates devices, or touches engineering interfaces without authorization.
