Information and consultation

Formal processes requiring employers to share relevant details and receive worker input before major decisions.

Information and consultation is a formal process that requires an employer to share relevant details about a planned change and to receive worker input before making major decisions. In cyber security, this matters when a company introduces tools that can affect employees across sites, such as identity monitoring, endpoint detection, logging, AI assistants, or centralized data platforms. The process does not stop security work, but it changes how quickly a rollout can proceed and what evidence must be documented.

Security teams encounter this in change control, privacy reviews, and workplace monitoring programs. Good consultation can surface operational blind spots, such as excessive data collection, unclear access rights, or a tool that creates false alerts and disrupts work. Poor consultation can lead to delays, mistrust, or shadow IT, which weakens defenses. For defenders, the practical goal is to make security deployments explainable, proportionate, and approved early enough to avoid conflict during implementation or incident response.
