Infrastructure reuse

The reuse of servers, domains, or tooling across separate campaigns, which can complicate attribution.

Infrastructure reuse is the practice of using the same servers, domains, IP addresses, certificates, or tooling across multiple malicious campaigns. Threat actors may recycle a command-and-control server, repurpose a phishing domain, or share malware loaders and admin panels between separate operations.

This matters because reused infrastructure creates overlapping indicators that can confuse attribution. A defender may see the same hosting provider, DNS patterns, or TLS artifacts in different incidents and assume they come from one actor, when they may reflect shared tooling, leased services, or brokered access. In practice, analysts use infrastructure reuse as a clue rather than proof: it helps cluster activity, track related campaigns, and hunt for adjacent compromises. Defenders can also watch for reuse in web shell paths, registration data, and backend connections to spot repeated infrastructure patterns before the next attack lands.
