INSM

Internal network security monitoring that looks for suspicious activity inside a protected network rather than only at the perimeter.

Internal network security monitoring (INSM) is the observation and analysis of activity within a protected network, rather than relying only on defenses at its perimeter. It can identify unexpected connections, unusual traffic volumes, unfamiliar communicating devices, or other deviations from normal behavior.

INSM matters because threats, misconfigurations, and compromised devices can operate inside a network and evade perimeter-focused controls. In industrial environments, monitoring helps security teams investigate anomalies using asset and operational context. Findings may inform remediation, but an alert does not automatically mean a system should be patched: operators must evaluate risk and follow testing, change-control, and safety procedures. Effective monitoring also depends on suitable data feeds, accurate baselines, and protected records.
