Integrated File System (IFS)

The hierarchical file space on IBM i used by many applications, scripts, and shared files.

The Integrated File System (IFS) is the hierarchical file space on IBM i. It lets the system store and access files with familiar path-based names, similar to directories and files on other platforms, while still fitting into IBM i’s authority model. Many applications, scripts, batch jobs, and shared documents live in the IFS, so it is a common place for business data and operational code.

IFS matters in cyber security because file integrity there can directly affect system behavior. If an attacker or misconfigured account can write to a sensitive IFS path, they may alter scripts, configuration files, or inputs used by privileged processes. Defenders protect the IFS with least-privilege permissions, careful authority reviews, change monitoring, and patching. In real attacks, the IFS is often the target of arbitrary file-write or path-manipulation issues, where a valid user can modify files outside the intended location and create persistence, disruption, or later privilege abuse.
