Inter-agency coordination

Cooperation between different organizations that must work together during a security event.

Inter-agency coordination is the planned cooperation between separate organizations that must respond to the same security event. In cyber security, those groups may include government agencies, military units, regulators, law enforcement, and private-sector defenders. They usually have different tools, authorities, procedures, and jargon, so coordination is the process that aligns their actions.

This matters because many attacks cross organizational boundaries. A ransomware outbreak, supply-chain compromise, or critical-infrastructure intrusion may require one team to detect the threat, another to preserve evidence, and another to isolate affected systems or protect public services. Good coordination speeds up alert sharing, reduces duplicated work, and prevents conflicting decisions. In defense, it is tested through exercises, joint incident-response plans, contact lists, and agreed escalation paths. In a real incident, weak coordination can delay containment; strong coordination helps multiple teams act on one shared threat picture.
