Interdisciplinarity

The practice of connecting methods or ideas from different fields to solve complex problems.

Interdisciplinarity is the practice of combining methods, ideas, and evidence from different fields to solve a problem that one discipline cannot handle alone. In cyber security, that often means bringing together computer science, network engineering, psychology, law, and operations. The goal is not breadth for its own sake, but a fuller view of how systems fail, how people are manipulated, and how risks spread across technology and organizations.

This matters because many attacks are mixed problems. A phishing campaign may rely on social engineering, malicious infrastructure, and weak identity controls at the same time. Effective defense also needs multiple perspectives: analysts for detection, engineers for hardening, incident responders for containment, and policy or compliance teams for reporting and recovery. Interdisciplinary thinking helps defenders connect technical signals with human behavior and business impact, making security decisions faster, more realistic, and harder for attackers to bypass.
