Internal policy

A written set of organizational rules that defines approved use, boundaries, and review steps.

An internal policy is a written rule set that tells an organization how a tool or process may be used, who may use it, what data is allowed, and when review or escalation is required. In cyber security, it turns general advice into enforceable practice. For AI use, it can define approved services, banned behaviors, data-handling limits, human oversight, and the approval steps needed before sensitive decisions are made.

Internal policy matters because many security failures start with unclear rules. Without one, staff may copy confidential data into unsanctioned AI tools, skip review, or rely on outputs they do not understand. Attackers also benefit from weak policy, since inconsistent controls make phishing, data exposure, and shadow IT easier to exploit. A strong policy supports defense by aligning training, permissions, logging, and audits so that daily work stays within safe boundaries.
