Internal triage

the first phase of checking logs, alerts, and user activity after an incident claim.

Internal triage is the initial, structured review a security team performs after an incident claim, alert, or suspicious report. It usually starts with checking logs, endpoint telemetry, authentication records, and recent user activity to decide whether the event is real, limited, or false.

This step matters because public victim claims, phishing reports, and automated alerts can all create urgency without proving compromise. Good triage helps defenders quickly separate noise from evidence, identify affected accounts or systems, and preserve logs before they age out. In real attacks, triage may reveal unusual logins, data access, or malware execution; in defensive operations, it can also show that no breach occurred and that the claim is unconfirmed. The goal is disciplined verification before escalation, containment, or public response.
